Ballard Power Systems of Burnaby, formerly located in North Vancouver, _ fs desianing most of the fuel cel! engines for the major aute manufacturers. Brady Fotharingham _ Contributing Writer ENERGY efficient fuel celis and low polluting power systems were the focus Tuesday when the National Research Council announced a $30 million initiative to establish a fuel cell — _research facility in Vancouver. . By next April, the National Research Council {NRC), plans to have completely ren- novated its current innovation research centre, which now focuses on the resource sector. with a separate wing of techni- ca! specialists iri advanced fuel cell technology. Located at the University of British Columbia (UBC), the NRC’s innovation centre Plans to capture the techno- logical momentum of Ballard Power Systems, co-founded by Dr. Geoffrey Ballard and Paul Howard of West Vancouver. Ed Capes, director gencral for the National Research Centre in Vancouver said the expansion of the innovation Cc é ER EXGHANGE PR GRA, centre would allow develap- ment of the fuel cell industry well beyond the automobile, which has been the primary focus for most corporate research. “This funding will allow for testing and assessment and let companies get experience in fuc! cells on a larger scale,” Capes said. Local companies like BC Hydro are looking at station- ary powce supply alternatives useful in remote communities using advances in fucl cell technology. At the NRC’s cen- tre, B.C. companies like 92 Low tim, 4X4, Sspd, ct clean, 1 owner, “summer fun” Statpower Technologies Corp. and Vancouver Island’s ASA Automated Systems are work- ing on support projects and beta testing of fuel cells, some of them already operational. Fuel cells, which basically capitalize on the heat and water vapour byproducts from a fuel cell’s electrochemical reaction, giving an engine its power, are viewed as the next economically feasible technical revolution in the transporta- tion and power supply fields.
