ondary. School engage in. various
forms of social service both in the
school and in the community.

One of the innovative activities
has’ been the development of a
Junior . Services . program where
students visit residents in the West
Vaincouver Extended Care Facility.

Before the students commenced
their. weekly visits, they par-
ticipated in workshops prepared by

-a psychologist and a geriatrician.

val will give our audience an op-
portunity to hear the accomplish-

The festival will feature or-
soloists, and small

ensembles frem Sir Winston Chur-
chil, Handsworth, Windsor, Sen-
tine] and West Vancouver Senior
Secondary School.

Tickets are $5 for adults, and $2
for students and seniors. The per-
formance will begin at.7 p.m. in
the West Van Senior Secondary
School Theatre, - 1750 ‘Mathers
Ave.

Refreshments: will be available
throughout the. evening and all
lovers of classical music. are en-
couraged to attend.

procedures, communication skills
and safety procedures.

Active seniors in the community,
the local volunteer agency, and the
International Baccalaureate coor-
dinator worked together to obtain
3 Canadian federal grant to assist
with the development of the pro-
gram as well as the production of a
video and manual to assist other
schools to develop a similar pro-
gram in their community.

The West Vancouver students

.. spend their time with the elderly in

a variety of ways. The activities
may include playing checkers or
other games, entertaining by play-
ing favorite tunes on a musical in-
strument, bringing pets or simply
assisting wherever they are needed.

Organizers of the program say
that. the students and seniors are
developing a ‘‘generation connec-
tion’’ that enables both genera-
tions to appreciate differing points
of view and.to understand that
people have similar goals and con-
cerns regardless of their physical
appearance and age.

his post as school custodian after
23 years of service. He was the
longest-serving custodian in the
West Vancouver School District.

On ‘‘Mr. Velo Day,’” the 59 year
old was feted by parents, teachers,
students and former principals.

Velo with a set of luggage, which
he and his wife Wanda are current-
ly. using on a_ two-and-a-half
month vacation back in Venice.

Each year, Velo will be
remembered at Westcot with the
presentation of a service award,
given in his name to a Grade 6
student who has shown some of
the selfless qualities that made
Velo so popular at the school.

Nor will Velo forget his friends
at Westcot. ‘I left my heart at this
school,”” he said shortly before
leaving its halls on “‘Mr. Velo
Day.”
