graffiti at several sites
in the Lonsdale area.

North Vancouver City
council has approved a pro-
posal by Youth Action
Resource Development
(YARD) Works to paint
murals on the walls of com-
mercial buildings frequently

tagged with graffiti. YARD is
a Youth Services Canada pro-
ject thar receives assistance
from a number of community
partners including — the
RCMP’s Lower Lonsdale
Community Policing Ceitre.
Work should begin in early
September at two mural sites
the YARD Works team has
undertaken to paint.

The murals are to be lecat-
ed at 127 Lonsdale Ave., to
the rear of Second Wave, and
278 E. Ist St., the site of
Medel Shipyards.

City council is reviewing
the feasibility of a mural at a
third site, 106 W. Ist St., for-
merly the Empire Theatre.

YARD has also gained
approval from city council to

hold a mura) contest for
young people. Murals are to
be located at 132) Wz.
Esplanade, to the west of the
Keg Restaurant and adjacent
to a parking lot; at 121 W. Ist
St., between the bottle depot
and Montana’s Sports Bar,
and at 1124 Lonsdale Ave., to
the rear of Lonsdale Mall.
The deadline for the con-

test, which is open to youths
aged 13 to 19, is Monday,
Sept. 8.
