Collingwood school student releases CD | | By Michael Becker News Editor michacl@nsnews.com HIS calling card says it all: Julian DS. Haigh, Boy Soprano. At 15, fulian is managing io cheat hormonal realities, He still has that angelic sound working for him. The North Vancouver singer also mani- fests the selling skills of a bud- ding gntreprencur, ‘The ovo talents combined earlier this year in’ February with the release of Blessings, a CD recording of Julian pre- senting a number of spiritual and secular classics, He put up $2,000 of his own money and then bor- rowed $3,000 from his parents to make the project happen, The CDs are available in local stores, Queens Stationers at Edgemont, HMV Park Royal, A&B Sound, The Magic Flure and Sikora’s inelu- sive, Ketter yet, young, Julian also sells the dise door to door oo the North Shore. He has already paid back the money owed to his parents, The fact is testament to the appeal of the music and Julian’s salesmanship. He began the direct sales effort in his Kensington Crescent neighborhood. “[ve been doing it around my house and I'ni just spread- ing out. T knock on the door and I tell them about myself and my experiences and I tell them about my CD. He offers a doorstep demonstration and perhaps will sing a snippet of Ave Maria by Schubert or 1 Know That My Redeemer Liveth by Handel. “They like it, Most of the people Fsing ta buy it,” he said, The CDs sell tor $16 and the tapes go for $10. “Once Pye sold cnough to regain my costs Pil probably put $2 from everything into. a charitable donation, but I don’t know if] can get that far, “Tam going to kvep some of it for university or for my mountain bike, Most of it will go toward my next CD,” said Julian, Over tie years he’s devel- oped his voice singing at church services, in competi- tions, with the choir at Collingwood school and with the B.C, Boy’s Choir. This CD realizes a long: standing dream. How long does he think he can hold on to the voice? Said Julian, “I think my dad went to his 16th year, but it could break tomorrow, Sometimes around Christmas time when | sing a lot and J get a cold, 1 think, Oh, no, this is the end.” Most his age are immersed in pop music culture, so Julian is a bit of an anomaly, He is both praised and misunder- stood for what he does with his voice, “It goes both ways. A lor of peuple say, ‘Hey you're a really good singer,’ or, ‘Wow, you've gota CD,’ “There’s a lot of positive enthusiasm and then you have ether people who say, ‘Man when's your voice going to break and they have a lor of derogatory remarks, Sometimes it puts me down into a pessimistic moad,” he: said, simply sings and bikes his way back to equilibrium. Or he listens to music. “Llike 1960s and 1970s music. I find it gets up your spirit and you get happy. Some of the rap and punk has really bad meanings and a negative atmosphere. That’s what I don't like.” Singing takes some work. Julian practises in his bed- room, looking out on a “won- derful” view of Vancouver. “When I sing, I don’t like to be narrow-minded. You have to almost live the piece. You want to work with it, maybe walk around the room or fie down and close your eyes and think about it, bur my dad comes up when he sees me lying on the floor and says, ‘Stand up straight?” Julian sings for any occa- sions.
