10 ~ Friday, November 15, 1996 — North Shore News Dear Editor: In his Nov. 10 News arti- cle, “Teachers grade trustee candidates in North Vancouver,” [an Noble makes a statement that is at best gra- tuitous and at worst manipula- tive by implying Deborah Kitson and Sue Cook received a failing grade from teachers because I am trying to protect my salary. He did so by juxtaposing my current salary and a retroactive salary payment I received in 1992 against my comment to him that the cause of the board's current financial difficulty is an inequitable funding formula rather than board mismanagement. The implication is that teachers will not support Kitson and Cook simply becatise we want to protect our ¥ salaries. Mr. Noble had the oppor- tunity to ask me about my salary when he interviewed me concerning our “Candidate Report Card.” He did not. Ifhe had, I would have told him that my 1992 retroactive salary included the extraordi- nary payment of a retroactive salary increase received by all teachers that year, and an approximate $15,000 payment to me that rectified a four-year mistake in the board's calcula- tion of my salary, in addition to the normal salary, benefits, and pension payable for that year. Clearly, Mr. Noble’s intent Was to impugn my motives and validate those candidates who attribute the North Vancouver School District’s fiscal prob- lems to the previous beard’s management, using my salary as an example. Both the North Shore News, however, and the candi- dates its reporter appears to support, are wrong in this posi- tion. The official trustee did not blame teacher salaries for our fiscal problems, nor did he identify any fiscal mismanage- ment. Indeed, Mr. (Bob) Smith found the amount paid to teachers was slightly below average when compared with other districts, As well, if Mr. Noble had done any research concerning teacher salaries, he would have discovered that, while teachers bring up to seven years of post-secondary education to our profession, we receive a lower salary than similar employee groups.
