You don’t think so? Well, a round-trip ticket from Vancouver to London this summer will be about $900 around the peak season. Ten years ago that ticket would have -. cost the same, and look how infla- _ tion has pushed up other prices such as rent and Mars bars. Therein lies a story. A Singapore-based expatriate Englishman who has done some _ remarkable travelling including the Whitbread round-the-world yacht race buys a Mars bar every time he goes to Britain and leaves it in the ‘pantry of his: Norfolk cottage. The -.: antival of a new Mars bar is the second half of his formula for cal- culating the U.K, rate of inflation. He's the kind of traveller, as opposed to tourist, that you meet on the road when you're going the budget route. Generally it's young people who do it this way, but an increasing number of all ages are opting for backpacks and hostels because they get closer to the country they are visiting as well as the people. What’s more they join the road network which shares information on where to go, where to stay, what to do and what to avoid. My advice — having ridden on the luggage racks of African trains, biked in Britain and figured out the Tokyo underground — is to go almost anywhere except Lagos, where you'll be robbed blind before you leave the airport. Pay particular attention to coun- tries unpopular with Uncle Sam, such as Cuba, because when Americans stay at home there’s more room for the rest of us. They are allowed to go to Egypt, but because the odd visitor gets shot the Americans tend to give it a wide berth. As a result Nile steam- ers are selling passages for half price or less and there are no line- ups at the monuments. My best‘advice is not to be © scared by London prices; it is cheaper than most big cities NOW 1S a great time to traval to ‘Egypt to see the p py -ramids, writes travel columnist David Wishart.
