HOW OFTEN have you left
an outfit looking ordinary
when the addition of a great
new accessory covld make it
look extraordinary?

Designers know the value in
. packaging their clothes — even
when they are “packaged” for dis-
play on a model.

When they presented their fall
fashion shows, designers brought the
clothing, and the runways, to life
through clever coordination. Some
accessories.and accent pieces were
done so well that a few collections
seemed to have placed more empha-
sis on presentation rather than on the
clothing itself.

Though some of the theatrical
fanfare was obviously unwearable
off of the runway, their show tech-
niques did prove to illustrate that
basic pieces can become new again
with a little mix mastery.

This influence is translated for
street wear into a trend that focuses
as much on how something is worn
as what is worm.

Therefore, if your fall budget
restricts major wardrobe additions,
you may simply need a little acces-
sory boost to revitalize your favorite
clothes,

Here is a look at runway accesso-
ry fashions and how they have influ-
enced women’s choices.

Accessory designs become strong
and dramatic, whether they are a pat-
terned menswexr vest, a heavy hard-
ware belt or a pair of provocative
woolly thigh-hishs.

loaded up.
® Scarves with fluted, crinkled,
sometimes furry textures tie or bow
at the neck.

® On top of that, long chains and
beads are worn. Long necklaces and
satin cords are sometimes draped
over the neck, not attached, in ban-
dolier fashion. Savvy women ‘are

(yes, white) in high-heeled shoes and
boots currently complete the most
modern looks,

® Fall legs are also covered in heav-
ily patterned and thick-textured
hose that reach to the thigh, (with the
top revealed under short skirts) just
over the knee and to the ankle.
‘Though the risqué, stay-ups look 44
is adopted only by the young, ;

mix incongruous materials, long
ropes of pearls and ornamental nec!.

® Belts bring back the waist as a
focus,

Wide-waist belts and classic trouser
belts are cut in all types of leathers
with big buckles. They go overtop of
long tunics and knitted dresses or
connect snug sweaters and shirts to
pants and skirts,

Belts now cinch many waists in
Manhattan, especially in night spots.

Adding attentica to the waist are
handbags, carried at waist level,
which are large and soft in rich jewel
toned leathers with lots of detail.

® Gloves are important to Ney
Yorkers, and practical for their win-
ters. Designers cover hands in knits,

mohair, tweeds and leathers with big,

textured cuffs and tailored detail.

@ Vests are shown by designers in
all shapes and sizes, cut from shear-
ling, menswear tweed and pinstripes,
mohair, knits and even chiffon. They
slide over shirts, turtlenecks, dresses
and over coats. As part of a knitted
ensemble they're layered over long
tunics, cropped pullovers and even
cardigans.
