By A.P, McCredie Sports Reporter His second thought was that his goal of repeating as “CN Tower Race to the Top’’ champion was in major jeopardy. On Oct. 30, Martell competed in a gruelling sprint up 1,760 stairs that climb into the Toronto skyline. So did Jeff Case. The Australian, Case, is a four-time Empire State Building stair-climbing champion, anid Martell’s only competition on the globe. “As soon as | saw Jeff in the lobby prior to the race | knew I was in trouble,’’ said the North Vancouver resident. ‘The guy is just a machine.”’ One-part machine himself, Martell finished second to the Australian with a time of 10 minutes and 11 seconds. Case crossed the line in a lung-straining time of 9:13. Going inte the race, Martell — who uses downtown Vancouver towers and 22nd Street in West Vancouver’ as training sites — hoped to break the 10-minute barrier. “By the end of the race it felt like | was breathing sand,’’ said the 29-year-old ex-triathlete. His sponsurs include Celtech, Footwerks and the Columbia Centre for Integrated Health Ser- vices. Dr. Sol Miller has worked extensively with Martell in mental conditioning —- an integral part of any endurance event.
