Wednesday, May 12, 1993 — North Shore News OOKING OUT on the rain-soaked, weed-choked disaster area most of us call the garden is enough to send you back to bed for a month. Fresh green new growth or the stubborn flowering of forgotten bulbs are on- ly daunting reminders of all the work waiting to be done. The best way to generate some inspiration for the task is to leaf through a few good gardening books, preferably ones lavishly il- lustrated with color photos of ‘magnificent gardens in full riot, like Nigel Colborn’s The Old- Fashioned Gardener (Raincoast Books, $29.95). in a series of “lessons from the past for the gardener of today,”’ Colborn explores the ancient roots of pldnt husbandry — natural, non-chemical, low-tech, time- tested techniques you ray remember your grandparents us- ing. Nostalgic licence may not be the only reason their remembered tomatoes taste better than yours. Jacqui Hurst's photos are superb and Colborn’s text is a reader-friendly mix of practical reference and fascinating historical asides on the evolution of garden designs, methods and tools. A delight to peruse even on a rainy ‘afternoon when there’s no chance of getting dirt under your nails. If the final section, “The Work- ing Garden,” brings on a touch of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, relief ‘is at hand in Kathleen Yeomans’ The Able Gardener from North John Moore BOOK REVIEW © Vancouver's Whitecap Books at $19.95. A registered nurse and physical therapist, Yeomans has closely observed the special needs of gardeners whose advancing age or physical disability presents an obstacle to the therapeutic joys of helping green things grow. Not so. Yeomans suggests a garden focused on highly scented plants and flowers, with strategically placed wind-chimes adding another dimension of beauty while functioning as subtle navigational aids. Brilliantly intuitive. A garden someone afflicted with 20/20 vi- sion would no doubt love. Another team of California gardeners, Georeanne Brennan and Mimi Luebbermann, offers a pair of books that will appeal as much to the condo-balcony sod- buster as the person with acreage to spare: Beautiful Bulbs and Little Herb Gardens, both subtitled “Simple Secrets for Glorious Gardens — Indoors and Out,’”’ both $16.95 from Chroni- cle/Raincoast.
