8 — Sunday, February 28, 1993 - North Shore News Mute witness Dear Editor: For the ‘‘voice of the North Shore’* your paper can be deplorably mute when you choase to “‘protect.”* Over the years I’ve had probably 90% of my letters to you published. So no cause for complaint there. And the fact also says something about the quality of said let- y last letter — written about three weeks ago — has not seen print, as I suspected it would not, despite the fact it was newsworthy, was 100% factual, and contained no ex- aggcrations. It concerned the snow. Lack of reroval by businesses and homeowners alike despite bylaw notices, ete. But my letter criticized our status quo did it not? I stressed lack of any action by police, bylaw patrols, or any- one possessing power to act! There lies reason for its non-appearance! Just who, or what body, are you so unwilling to upsct? No wonder nothing ever im- proves. And never will with your attitude, You sure lack credibility. A.B. Griffin North Vancouver MAILBOX BC ‘Tel proposal to recover costs only Dear Editor: Mr. Kantor‘’s claim that BC TEL is trying to “rip off" the public through its preposal to make the Lower Mainland one focal calling area is completely without foundation (letter to the editor, Feb. 17). A basic premise of the proposal is that it nor add to BC Tel’s cof- fers. What we would gain in addi- tional loca! revenue would cover what we lose in long distance rev- enue and the costs of the project, nothing more. Cost recovery is essential so that customers outside the Lower Mainland would not ultimateiy subsidize the project. If BC TEL did not follow these criteria — under the close scrutiny of the CRTC — we believe the CRTC would not seriously con- sider the proposal. Our reason for making the pro- posal is simple. Customers in the Lower Mainland have told us in phone calls, letters, and meetings that they want and need a tele- phone rate structure that reflects new demographic and economic realities. Although we have tried to make the proposed rate structure as fair as possible, it is true that not every customer would’sce an im- LOOK FOR THE CONTEST WINNERS NEXT WEE @ - ERIDAY, f) SATURDAY, Mi SUND a aaa _ Av TH THE 1993 SHRINE CIRCUS HAS A NEW LOOK FOR 1993. However, everyone would benefit in future by being able to call mere communities without paving Icng distance charges. BC Tel is not trying to foist this proposal on an unwilling public. The majority of the customer feedback to this well-publicized proposal has been supportive. However, if extending local calling to include the entire Lower Mainland at these rates is not in the best interest of the public — . and that is for the CRTC to determine based on input from customers — BC Tel will accept the decision and maintain the cur- rent local calling areas.
