Dear Editor: I am writing to protest what I consider to be a further erosion of our freedom as evidenced by the provincial government's proposed “Holiday Shopping Act” and particularly North Vancouver's willingness to unquestioningly comply with yet another absurd restriction. All too often today we are the victims of an increasing flood of regulations which prevent us from engaging in the simplest and most reasonable activities. In the case of this legislation what can _pessibly be by the compulsory closure of businesses on a Sunday? As the law presently stands, no one is forced to open their store on a Sun- day, just as no one is forced to shop. The government should let the market be the arbiter of such activity. If opening one’s business on a holiday is not economically profitable, that store will soon close. If individuals are Opposed to shopping on Sundays, then they should refrain from doing so and by their absence make their wishes felt in the pocket- book of the merchant. They should not however, have the right to dictate what others may do on their Sundays. It has been suggested that GS mailbox Shopping act turns back clock work, and may find weekends or holidays the only time which they may shop together with their family. There are members of the business community who support and indeed, have even lobbied the govern- ment to enact such an inhibitory law. While they might claim that is in the public’s best interest, their underlying reason is an unwillingness to face honest competition in the free market. They falsely argue that extended hours. will push their prices up because ) A9 - Wednesday, November 26, 1980 - North Shore News LOOK for the SHOPPERS DRUG MART Senior Citizens Day that has made the capitalist municipal governments SPECIALS system productive! should recognize this and C SECTION, It is interesting to note not attempt to turn the clock BACK PAGE that the Holiday Shopping back to a time when com- SHOPPERS Act will prohibit the sale of merce was regulated by DRUG MART lumber, groceries, furniture and appliances while per- Mitting nurseries and flower shops to remain open. Early American School House The people of North Vancouver deserve to make their own choice on when on Sunday will somehow draw the family unit closer together. The reality of our busy modern life is that often both parents of a family of the high Cost of wages. If such is the case then they need not stay open. In truth, they are crying to the government to protect them from the very competition ‘Inquiring about separatism’ Dear Editor: Any damn fool can give things away but it takes a salesman to make a profit. I am referring to the huge export balance in our favor that the government is bragging about. With our dollar discounted as it ts. there is no wonder we are able to meet world competition. With the natural resources we have in this country to back up our dollar, it should be the premium rate in the world.
