8 - Sunday, July 26, 1992 - North Shore News Fairway Place move was carried out in kind and sensitive manner Dear Editor: Your article of July 3 regarding the removal of the operating licence for the Fairway Place group home for the mentally ill may have left your readers with the impression that the North Shore Community Mental Health Centre acted in an uncaring man- ner in removing the facility's five residents from this facility. In fact, the owner of Fairway Place was aware of the decision by the Provincial Adult Care Fa- cilities Licensing Board to remove the licence and was informed prior to the event that mental health centre staff would be required to remove their clients to properly licensed facilities. This necessary move was carried out in a sensitive and caring man- ner, and the reactions of the resi- dents during this operation, as described in your paper by the fa- cility staff and owner, were great- ly exaggerated. The Mental Health Centre staff took the time to explain the situa- tion to each of the five residents, who were all offered appropriate alternative accommodation. The removal of the licence of any care facility is a serious mat- HORSESHOE BAY vresi- are not the B.C. dents about happy Ferry Corporation's addition of night sailings to the Horseshoe Bay-Manaimo rua. Rosalind Baltzer Turje Director North Shore Community Mental Health Centre Personal art critique was unwarranted Dear Editor: 1 carefully read Ron Falcione’s July 8 article about the sculptures of the Polish artist Richard Wo- jciechowski at Rogers Plaza. f was struck by the fact that it was written not from a critical, artistic perspective, but from a personal one. Falcione writes: “Richard Wojciechowski, a Polish artist had only just emigrated to Canada the previous year."’ Canadian sculptor Bill Reid is recognized for his work in all-night sailings?” Of tne 427 respondents, 234. or 54.8%, said they agreed, while 74, or 17.3%, said they did not agree arid 119 people had no opinion. Of the 74 people who disagreed, 35 were from the Ambleside, Dundarave and Horseshoe Bay areas. in the beginning of July we asked West Vancouver resi- dents only if they had been affected by the all-night sail- ing. Of 140 residents 128 said they had not been affected and 11 said that they had. Washington, D.C., while sculptor Henry Moore is recognized by his work in Vancouver. Given the context of Falcione’s aitack, con- cern over the recent arrival of the artist on Canadian shores appears to point to a xenophobic subtext. One may indeed note that Richard Wojciechowski has been very widely recognized, not only in Canada, but also in Western Europe where his sculptures grace public squares in a number of cit- ies. It is not necessary to go into the details of Richard Wo- jciechowski’s portfolio. it is enough to say that he is interna- tionally recognized. Mr. Falcione goes into ex- haustive detail on the presumed collective neuroses of the commis- sioning selection committee. Perhaps he should examine his own. Of course, everyone has a right to an opinion, but it should be emphasized that this review is personal opinion and an attempt to discredit an artist's work based upon personal rather than authoritative, critical or artistic criteria.
