MAPS to make seniors’ transport easier, safer BONNIE PLUNKETT is hoping to map out a strategy to make life a little easier for North Shore seniors. Plunkett has been appointed coordinator of MAPS, the Mak- ing Access Possible Safety pro- gram, a six-month project funded by the Ministry of Health to in- vestigate and come up with ways of making driving, transit and pe- destrian routes for seniors safer and easier to travel. The project was initiated by the North Shore Seniors’ Health Planning Office (NSSHPO). While Plunkett will be working with all three North Shore municipalities on the project, she says an important part of its suc- cess depends on input from seniors. Plunkett will be interviewing seniors for their ideas on how to improve Iccal transportation and pedestrian routes. The ultimate goa! of the six- month project will be to make recommendations to the three North Shore municipalities and then, working with several dif- ferent community groups, produce safe driving and safe pedestriai maps of the different areas. The maps will be designed using such details as traffic volumes and parking, lighting and visibility as well us pedestrian volumes, as s Reporter determined by municipal traffic studies. Plunkett and NSSHPO hope to have the maps completed by the end of September, then approved by the three municipal councils and distributed throughout the North Shore. In addition, the group wants assurances from North Shaie municipalities that they will make the structural design changes needed to alleviate problems that have been identified during the neighborhood analysis program. Part of the group’s mandate is to encourage seniors to look at their own patterns of moving around the North Shore. Using basic street maps, they will target the most convenient driving, walking anc public transit routes that allow seniors to go from their homes, to shops, rec- reation centres, fibraries, doctors’ offices, banks and other locations.
