MAILBOX Collins defends comments To the Editor: Mr. R.J. Hartman of North Vancouver is upset about me and my ‘‘drivel."” § ignore the truth, he says in a Letter of the Day, and did so in my ‘'Tales from the loony bin’’ column of April 24, in which t mentioned the decision by the Supreme Court of Canadz to release Wesley Evans, a ‘‘setf- confessed double murderer."* Evans, he says, was menially retarded and was cajeled into making a confession. How do ! account for not reporting that, he wants to know? He also thinks 1 am a louse for not loving the Charter of Rights, under the pro- visions of which Evans was let go. My answer is that the affair oc- cupied cne paragraph in a column Northlands Dear Editor: F would like to address some of the misleading information being presented in the last few months regarding the proposed Nor- thlands Golf Course. It has been claimed that the cost of the golf course to the taxpayers would be over $40 million, based on estimated foregone land sales. 1 could write paragraphs on why this estimate is too high, but it doesn’t matter whether the amount is $20 million or $50 mil- lion because the municipality would retain ownership of the land. Not only would the land be ap- preciating in value, but it would Make way Dear Editor: I would like :o take time out of this busy day to reply to Evan Munro’s plea in his letter to the editor to leave the trees alone on the site of the new Cove Cliff Schooi. Evan, I truly feel bad that you will lose your favorite playing spot. I, too, used to play in this area many years ago. Having grown up in Deep Cove I miss the trees and especially all the wildlife that used to roam, Yes, this is ali due to a lot of Mailbox policy LETTERS TO the editor must in- clude your name, written legibly, your full address and telephone number. Had 1 been doing so, t weuld certainly have given spice to the Supreme Court's ressoning. | would also have pointed out chat Evans was first found guilty in a trial by jury and that his mente! capacities were not a paramount issue. If they had been, he might have been found rot guilty by reason of insanity. The case then went to the B.C. Appeal Court and was lost, Madame Justice Mary Southin declaring: ‘‘There is nothing more likely to bring the administration of justice into disrepute than let- ting a self-confessed killer en free to kill again on the basis of the type of (Charter) infringements in this case. The framers of the Charter can not have intended that in the name of adjudicative fairness the Charter should be ap- plied so as to let an aecused go free to kill again. Such a result would not be the act of a civilized society."* As for the man’s having been cajoled into making a confession, 1 refer Mr. Hartman to the com- ment by Me. The opponents of the golf course are saying this is a valuable piece of land, so we should sell it. We’re saying it’s a valuable piece of land, so we should keep it, and let’s get it to produce some reve- hear anybody screaming about lost land sales when Lynn Canyon was turned into park. We realized during that discussion that the value of these undeveloped lands is infinitely more than the foregone land sales. The real issue here is a good community plan for North Van- couver, one that provides for all the needs of its citizens and makes it a great place to live. Municipal golf courses have the highest usage per acre of any park use, are environmentally friendly, provide income to the municipali- ty, create employment, provide a positive pastime for young people, leave green belt in developed areas, provide badly needed recre- ational facilities and increase the value of surrounding lands. This is not a difficult decision. Bruce Hamersley, P. Eng. President North Shore Public Golf Course Society for Cove Cliff School senseless building. They tel! me this is progress. But let’s not forget, Evan, that this place was already partially cleared and that there has been a lot of very careful planning so that very few trees will have to be taken down. Also, let’s not forget that this is being done to pravide a new school for children like yourself. To give you all a safe, healthy new environment in which to learn, make friends and grow. Perhaps you could explore Myr- tle Park or take a buddy and check out the trails in behind the old park. You know, just up the road off the corner of Rockcliff and Reaburn. We used to call it ‘Sugar Mountain.”’ I truly hope you enjoy your new school, Evan. Learn and grow. See old friends and make new friends. This schoo! has been a long time in coming. A very long time.
