Sunday, November 18 , 1990 - North Shore News - 13 Volunteers needed to aid local victims of crime THE NORTH Vancouver RCMP detachment is looking for volunteers to help victims of crime. The detachment'’s Victim Assistance Program (VAP) was established in 1984 to provide a follow-up support service to crime victims. Teams of community volunteers contact victims to offer assistance and tend an empathic ear to con- cerns. At a more basic level, a call from a VAP volunteer fets a vie- tim know that someone cares and that the individual’s case is being addressed. Working with a core group of 20 volunteers, Walsoff would like to see another 10 signed up. Said Walsoff, ‘"It’s an outreach program. The volunteers do not do counselling ~~ it’s mainly ac- tive listening and referring.”’ Last month, which was slower than usual for VAP, the program handled 136 calls and sent out 74 letters. Added Walsoff, *‘We will send out letters to people who we have trouble contacting or who would fike further information.” VAP volunteers work from Police files and address cases in- volving residential break and enters, sudden death, assaults, suicides, missing people, and obscene or threatening phone calls. All potential volunteers are ask- ed io make a one-year commit- ment to the pregram. They must undergo an RCMP security check before joining the program and must adhere to strict rules of confidentiality. Volunteer application packages can be picked up at the North Vancouver RCMP detachment.
