19 - Friday, January 26, 1990 - North Shore News Female job seekers find support WOMEN SEEKING to enter the labor market or to change their jobs will have an opportunity to join one of two Job Seeker’s Net- work Groups being offered by the North Shore Women's Centre (NSWC). Although the targeted partici- Pants are mature women in the 45 to 60 year age range, others will be welcome as space allows. The 10-week program, which is co-sponsored by the NSWC and the Learning Resources Group, will focus on self-awareness, goalsetting, confidence-building, and labor market and training in- formation. Elicia Hart, who facilitated the fall sessions of Job Seekers, com- ments on how rewarding it is to see changes and growth taking piace within the group. ‘Functioning in a group setting of this kind was a new experience for the majority of the participants, and so emphasis was placed on developing trust and a supportive, non-judgmental en- vironment. Women stated that the sharing of information, and the opportunity to give and receive support was very helpful and validating for them.”’ A ‘graduate’ from the fall ses- sion, Lynn Anderson, praises the environment for being one where “I felt it was safe to take risks. The goal which I defined for myself was to pursue employment in the fashion industry — some- thing I’ve always wanted to do. I gained the confidence to knock on doors of people in the business to ask them how to get started, and I’ve been successful in acquiring some paid work.”’ Since the goal of the groups is to find or change work, and for many women this involves computer skills, NSWC has also been able to Teach fitness LEARN HOW to teach a fitness class to music at recCentre Lons- dale. The course is offered Mondays, Jan. 29 to Feb. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m., and includes one Saturday on Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Elizabeth MacGregor, the pro- grammer at Lonsdale, is excited about this course and the oppor- tunities it presents for people in- terested in teaching. ‘‘You’ll learn a repertoire of exercises for each area of a fitness class,’’ says MacGregor, ‘thow to motivate a class and, most importantly, build the confidence and esteem within yourself to carry this out.”’ The course is taught by the Total Training company which is highly recognized in the field of fitness leadership in the province, accord- ing to MacGregor, and which is responsible for organizing an an- nual Fitness For The Future workshop.
