STEPHEN BARRINGTON feature writer “Even though | listened to black radio, | had my ears open, and | would hear all this other stuff," says A-Train, former bassist with the now-defunct Payola$ and later Rock and Hyde. ‘It was always there.”’ When he picked up a guitar for the first time, he rubbed the flat af his hand across the strings, creating the sound of a train, and at nine years old took his first stab 1988 - North Shore News A MAN and his bass... at playing. Finding his childhuod music on the gospel circuit of southern California, the Los Angeles-raised teenager was soon working the bars and dance clubs as well as the churches. “Motown, James Brown, music of that era and, of course, the church started me off with the beat and the feel,’' he say's, finger- ing his acoustic bass and pioduc- ing a tune seemingly without ef- fort. He has used the name A-Train since the early ‘70s, and ‘‘though it should have," the handle did not come as a result of that first musical effort. With people always wanting to shorten his name, A-Train became progressively known as Alex, Al and finally just A.
