DEEP COVE residents may be getting a new community hall, but hopes for a planned new boat- house are now less optitnistic. Although North Vancouver District Council has not yet made a decision on the Deep Cove project, which includes construction of a community replacement hall and a small boat storage facility, most aldermen said they could not sup- port funding a new boathouse. “We cannot afford spending $335,000 on something that is used by a limited number of people at a limited time of year,'' Ald. Bill Rodgers told council Monday. Plans for a new community hall and boathouse were supported by residents at a Jan. 28 public meeting, most of whom were in favor of building.an expanded hall on Gallant Avenue at a cost of ap- proximately $350,000, and to relocate the boathouse southeast of its present site. The move would cost the district an extra $185,000 for rowing shell storage and to redevelop the shoreline around the boathouse. Ald Ernie Crist said while coun- cil has an obligation to approve construction of the hall, which if approved will be paid for by the district, the Capilano Lions, and the community, a boathouse is a “luxury we can't afford this year.”’ “*We have a long shopping list,’’ he said, ‘'$335,000 is difficult to come up with.” /(ély7 BREAK THE PATTERN OF POVERTY Please contribute to: | C il S V5; 7 56 Sparks Ottawa Canad a da| KIP 581 (613) 234-6827 support of a science centre : . Baker asked for council’s sup- port. Monday to fund a $17.3 mil- ’ lion centre, which will see North Vancouver District and other Greater Vancouver municipalities contributing a $1 million regional grant towards the project. And that means that local homeowners will be hit with a $2 per$100,000 home tax in order to raise $50,000 for the centre. Ald. Bill-Rodgers said if council supports such a proposal it will be “stepping outside our authority.” But Baker said a grant for the . Science Centre would be ‘‘breaking new ground”? for the GVRD and that similar grants are presently being considered to fund cultural groups that service a whole region. ‘Ald.
