The workshop addresses two issues: drugs and personal power. Par- ticipants enhance their sense of personal power through training in ad- vanced interpersonal communication skills. The instructional context is drug and alcohol use. The eight-week program addresses the following questions: How does addiction to drugs happen? How do I recognize if a friend has a drug problem? How do I help a friend who is using drugs too frequently? * What are the effects of different drugs and what are the dangers? How would I know if I have a drug problem? Through the use of videos, presentations and discussion, participants will learn both the facts and the dynamics of drug use. Discussion will also centre around such questions as: How do } stand up for my rights? How do I stop others from taking advantage of me? How can I make decisions independent of what my friends think? How can I say no to others? This component of Lifeskills will address peer and family pressures, and how to deal with them by learning effective communication skills. Participants will examine how to get what they want without denying the rights of others or using aggression. For further information about the free Youth Under Pressure: Lifeskills program call Neil Huestis at 986-2255.
