When purchasing a_ bicycle, make sure the one you select fits you. You should be able to easily straddle the bike’s top tube with your feet flat on the floor. A salesperson can adjust the saddle for you and make recom- mendations for changes in the stem length and handlebar width. He may also cover how to in- flate the tires, operate any quick releases and shift gears. If you are unsure about anything, make sure you ask. Most shops insist that you bring the bike back after 30 days for a checkup and adjustment. Take ad- vantage of this free service by making note of any funny noises or looseness and writing down any questions that occur to you in the first few weeks of riding. The three styles of bicycles most people are familiar with are the rugged one-or three-speed models with upright handlebars, the 10-or 12-speed models with drop handlebars, and the newest craze, the fat-tired multi-speed mountain bikes with upright handlebais. Be aware that components such as handlebars can be changed to suit you — you needn’t buy a mountain bike just because you want a bicycle with upright handlebars. You should select your bicycle based on frame design, number of gears and price. Ev.n the wheels can be changed. Good quality bicycles wil: be constructed of high-carbon steel or high-strength steel alloys, and the tubing for these frames is usually butted (thinner in the middle) for lightness. Beyond a certain price, bicycles, like cars, become extravagant {ux- uries. Quality increases with price for both frame construction and components. If you buy a bicycle with a good frame and less expensive compo- nents, you can always improve the components as you are able to af- ford them.
