SMOKING IN the workplace will be illegal in North Vancouver
City under a draft bylaw approved Monday by city council for
public and business consideration.

Under the rules, bylaw offenders are liable for a $2,000 fine if
convicted.

Siated to come into effect June 30, the bylaw prohibits smoking
in financial institutions and government offices, workplaces, hos-
pitals and service lineups.

Tailored alter the Vancouver smoking bylaw enacted Dec. I,
1986, the new bylaw will be sent to various business groups for
their comments on the changes.

A public policy meeting will be held April 13 to discuss the

smoking bylaw.
Of the seven-member council, only Ald. Dana Taylor smokes.

MEHR fraud case

-A 22-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man has been remanded to

~ April 28 to stand trial on two charges of defrauding the Ministry of-

+ Fred Marvin Harper appeared in North Vancouver provincial
court Friday to face two counts of fraud laid against him in con-
nection with incidents between June 1984 and October 1984 and
October 1986 in which he allegedly failed te declare income earned
while he was receiving social assistance.

THE WEST Vancouver District Fire Department has volunteered
staff and equipment to help film television public announcement
messages on hote} fire safety features.

The four’ commercials, being produced by BCTY, will be shown
on all television stations in B.C., on stations across Canada and on
stations as distant as Oregon and Hawaii.

The commercials urge people to ask hotel mans zement, prier to
making travel plans, if its hotel is equipped with smoke detectors
and sprinklers.

The commercials are being sponsored by the Greater Vancouver

Regional Fire Chiefs Association ~ an organization made up of
the 13 Lower Mainiand fire departments.
