IF ALL the gold mined over the
last 6,000 years were gathered and
melted down, it would fill no more
than 30 large railroad boxcars.

The Gold Information Centre,
based in Toronto, recently released
a number of golden trivia facts.
For instance, did you know that
more steel is poured in the world in
one hour than gold has been
poured since the beginning of
time?

Gold is also the first element
mentioned in the Bible, and nearly
all the gold found during the last
6,000 years is still in man’s posses-
sion. It is estimated that another
34,000 metric tons remains in the
earth today.

The innermost coffin used to
bury the young Egyptian pharoah
Tutankhamen is probably the big-
gest gold object to have survived
from antiquity. Uncovered | in
1922, it represents 2,448 pounds of
beaten 22 karat gold, decorated in-
side and out.

The word karat derives from the

Italian carato, the Arabic girat, or |

the Greek keration, ail meaning
the fruit of the carob tree. The
seeds of the fruit were once used to
balance the scales in weighing gems
and gold in Oriental bazaars.

Gold is the most ductile and
malleable of all metals — one
ounce can be stretched into a wire
five miles long or hammered into a
sheet so thin it covers 100 square
feet.

The U.S. space shuttie Colum-
bia, launched in April 1981, utiliz-
ed 1,312 ounces of fine gold in
such vital elements as pre-form
brazing material, fuel celi fabrica-
tion and Goldized Kapton, accor-
ding to NASA.

Styling secrets
for long fair

IF YOU'VE got long locks you
might benefit from the following
styling tips.

Dry long hair by blow drying
sections from roots to ends, while
pulling hair straight with your
vhand or a brush. Note the more
firmly you pull, the longer and
straighter it will look.

mousse or gel on wet hair, then
bend. over and Jet hair fall freely
toward the floor while you blow
dry. .
°To add body, wrap a damp
section of hair around a styling
brush and direct airflow onto the
brush.

Make sure hair is thoroughly
dry so it can hold its style.

eTo style after it’s dry, pull hair
back with a brush, spray, then use
blow drying at high speed for three
seconds.

eTo style a layered top, apply
gel or mousse, lift with fingers,
and blow dry at low speed.
