af 10 ~ Wednesday, November 27, 1985 — Nort Stolen bicycles. on auction block HOT BICYCLES are being fenced Saturday at the North Vancouver Recreation Centre but the. thieves won't share in the profits. Approximately 150 stolen bicycles recovered by North Vancouver RCMP over the last year are being sold off to the public, said North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Don Jette. Doors at the Recreation Centre’s Capilano Room open at noon and the auc- tion begins at 1 p.m., Jette said. The stolen bicycles were recovered by police, but because owners failed to give an exact description of the bike to police thet could not - be returned. “*Between Nov. 1984, and Nov. 1985, 645 bicycles were reported stolen,’’ said Jette. “‘While this represents an ‘1 per cent decrease from last year, at an average cost of $400 per bicycte, the an- nual bill for lost bicycles is $258,000."" The RCMP suggest bike owners engrave their driver’s licence number (or a parent’s number) on the bicycle. This protects it from theft and ensures the bike can be returned if recovered by Police. Jette says the North Van- couver detachment is star- ting a bicycle identification program early in the new year. For no cost they will engrave your driver's licence number in ten different loca- tions — including all remov- able pieces — of each bicy- cle. This saves having to re- cord the individual parts of the cycle, Jette said. Watch the News for fur- ther information on times, dates and locations of the identification program.
