Church is a Commie. | don't Take the statements made the other day at UBC Ly the Right Rev. Robert Smith, moderator of the United Church of Canada, who was going on about food banks. Food banks are a bad thing, says this spokesman for Jesus because every time you throw a can of meat into a food bank or write a che- que for one you are ‘‘pro- longing the agony of the poor” and letting the gov- ernment off the hook. What the Christian gentleman is really saying is that it’s better to let people starve than let the wicked government off the hook. Which is pretty strange reasoning for a Jesus man. British Columbians, he asseverated, are allowing themselves to be co-opted into ‘‘the B.C. spirit’. And he continued: ‘“‘What would happen if an election were called for the spring of 1986, and all of you told all of the. parties that. you were going to close your doors six months after 4051 Marine Drive % North Van. the election?’ The poor, quoth he, answering his own questicn, might become a potent force for political change. By which he meant, presum- get this str could be a loony because these days most churchmen are loonies. And they're not all in the United Church, although sometimes you might think so. Canadian churches lust ht ai Te by Doug Collins ably, that the Socreds would be out and the socialists in. Well, maybe they would be and maybe they wouldn’t. I suspect, though, that it wouldn’t make a damned bit of difference -- except that people who are getting some food bank help now wouldn't be getting it thea. Meanwhile we may be sure, the Right Reverend wouldn’t be going on any hunger stzike himself. Clergymen have to keep their strength up. Another thing the Right: Reverend is saying here is that the worse things are, the better they will become. That’s what Karl Marx said. That’s what alf com- munists say. And terrorists. And Joonies of all sorts. Misery, they say, brings the 1evolution closer. I'm not saying that the for the blacks to take over in South Africa, thus paving the way for some Marxist to tule the Cape (for we may be cre that little old Bishop Tutu wouldn’t fast long). Canadian churches oppose American economic aid for the anti-Marxist opposition in Nicaragua. There are dozens of such examples, Nearer home, the Anglicans, Roman Catholics and the United Church backed the strike against Eaton's in Ontario. Which is OK, except that I never hear of any church paying union wages to its employees. That’s different. : Parsons have become pol- iticians. I don’t want to make it because while there are any poor devils who really do need food their existence is justified. Human nature being what it is, though, a lot of people will turn up to collect free munchies when they’ don’t really need them. 1 hear all kinds of stories, but PH leave it at that because it has nothing to do with what Smith is saying. Meanwhile, our clever Right Reverend invites us to make things worse so that they may become better. And he ignores the fact that about one-eighth of our provincial revenues go to charity, through the Ministry of Human Resources. Faith, hope, and charity, said St. Paul, and the greatest of these is churity. But the Right Reverend says that’s wrong. Is he the tinkl- ing cymba!?
