It all started one day last week when I! suggested to Brian that he take a day off and we'd go Christmas shop- ping in Bellingham. ‘‘UNN- NGH” isn’t much of a reply so when he left for work next day | figured he meant ‘‘Fall on your head’’ or something equally loving. At noon, while I was dress- ed in my very best elderly track suit (It’s used to keep me warm when I’m paying the hydro bill) a cheery hus- band phoned suggesting | pack up a couple of satchels and we’d head across the border. The track suit got sloughed, the hair got washed and | got packed in a record 20 minutes. First, the car needed some attention. That meant a trip to Richmond. We fuddled around and by the time we hit Highway 999 South it was after three o'clock. Ever try the Massey Tunnel and 99 at rush hour? Be eternally grateful you live on the North Shore. But, Bellingham was sull there, despite rumors to the contrary. ‘‘Let’s go find an old hotel. Lots of at- mosphere!’’ Brian looked at me as if 1°d suggested a sleep- ing bag under the Ferndale bridge. Inventor's historic park ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, the world-famous in- ventor of the telephone, spent the last 37 summers of his life at Baddeck, Nova Scoua on Cape Breton, 75 km west of Sydney. Baddeck reminded Bell of his native Scotland and he worked there on a vaniety of projects. Today, Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Park contains exhibits, films and models of Bell’s life and work Some of the items on display are models of carly telephones, kites, acronaulical equipment, and a vacuum jacket, the forerun ner of the iron lung. I'll bet there’s no one at Motel 6. Let’s give ita try.”’ His reply condensed to, ‘“‘No damn way.’’ ] suggested a quick look at the wares at the two tiny malis on Meridian St. (the Payless Drugs — Cost Cutter Toys on one side and Jaffco on the other). By the time we got out of there it was truly dark, cold and miserable. We'd bought the big total of a bottle of club soda and a few packages of American cigarettes. We resumed a southerly direction on I-5, looking for a place to stay. ‘“‘HOLIDAY INN?” shouted Brian as he cut left. Just what I’d always wanted. ] got us a double room — $53 (A) regular but I got a commercial rate $48 with a business card. Still, I had two more money savers tucked away. We have two coupon books — ‘‘Entertainment °84"’ and ‘‘Solid Gold’’. Neither has coupons for lodging in the Bellingham area but Solid Gold had two dinner coupons that looked interesting. We called. One, ‘The Hunt’’ is out of business. The other ‘*Twin Hall houses a !00-seat theatre where films recounting Bell’s accomplishments are shown continuously. There was also a snack table — free — with deep fried fish bites, cheese, crackers and a tasty dip. That took the edge off our appetite and we walked across the parking lot to Fred For more information about Canada’s national historic parks and sites, con- tact Parks Canada Informa- Fight the lung cripplers. . The good news is that Meyer’s is still giving the 14% exchange rate to anyone paying in Canadian cash or using a personal cheque. That’s night! Use a properly printed cheque and all they want by way of I.D. is a driver’s licence. The bad Mews is that almost everything I wanted to buy was out of stock. I’ve got some fine ‘‘rain checks’’ but can’t use them. Back to the hotel. We decided that we might as well eat ‘‘in’’? — house restaurant called ‘‘Northern Naviga- tuon’’. They have a picture of the chef prominently displayed on one wall — I’m surprised he’d show his face. The appetizer — scallops in bacon — wasn’t bad. The soup, cream of broccoli was good. We should have stop- ped there. We had small filets in Marsala — and someone without a touch of class add- ed something like honey to the Marsala. Yetch. My steak was cold, the baked potato had grown old waiting for me, the bacon bits had a close relationship to soybeans and the chives were dried. I could have used some crunchy vegetables but the chef chose to serve one of those purple rings of candied pineapple topped with a hunk of cann- ed peach. If I served bacon like that, one of our kids would yell, “‘Hey, Mom burned the bacon!’’ The toast had accompamied the bacon to hell and back. The scrambled eggs were just like our middle daughter likes them — cooked half an hour. Don't ask about the hash browns. Mine might have worked all morning scrubb- ing pots in the kitchen.
