By CHRIS LLOYD LGH doctors den breaking abortion law Medical chiefs at Lions Gate Hospital are cate- gorically denying that the hospital abortion policy contravenes the Criminal Code. Chief of Medical Staff at LGH Don Warner and Presi- dent of Medical Staff Dr. Frank Sigurdson have jointly replied to allegations of Pro- Life endorsed candidates. The four anti-abortion candidates standing in Wednesday's election — Harvey Deibert, Dr. Declan P. Lawlor, Anna Leduc and S. Donald Swabey — made various accusations in a collective press statement which was given coverage in Wednesday's North Shore News as a result of the candidates declaring their intention to run on_ the abortion issue. One of the charges levelled by the four was that the hospital's therapeutic abortion committee does not act within the spirit or letter of the law, in defiance of the Minister of Health and the Attorney-General of B.C. Doctors Warner and Sigurdson reply: “The com- mittee approves abortions in cases where continuation of the pregnancy is a threat to the life of the pregnant woman. “Each member's (of the abortion committee) opinion is independent and bona fide. This complies exactly with the letter and the spirit of the law. “It must be particularly stressed that (the applica- tions of) patients appearing before the therapeutic abortion committee have been pre-screened in the doctor's office before ap- plication is made.” _ They say they are disturbed to see “this blatantly false statement regarding the abortion policy at Lions’ Gate Hospital” and they insist the hospital has never carried out abortions where the pregnancy has gone beyond 20 weeks. Staff at LGH have re- affirmed by an 80 per cent vote that they wish the hospital to continue with its present abortion policy, the doctors say, adding that the preoccupation of abortion by Pro-Life endorsed board members cause division in the hospital and distracts the board from dealing with other important hospital matters. Doctors Warner and Sigurdson say the eight hours’ discussion on abortion during the past year amounts to more than 20 per cent of the board's time. They are urging hospital society members to turn out to elect a board that expres- ses the feelings of the community. About 4,000 people’ are expected to attend Wed- nesday’s annual meeting. Trustee David Craig voted against the motion, saying, “I don’t feel the alternatives have been explored properly.” But trustee Frank War- burton said he supported the plan “with reluctance, as the best alternative since the District won't go along with us... “We have been thwarted all the way by what appears to be subversive elements on the District council,” he said. In July, North Van District council rejected an ap plication by the school board to have two parcels of land adjoming the Cove Chiff site rezoned public assembly, effectively blocking the construction of a new school to replace the detenorating Burrard View Several options were open to the school board at this stage. including extensive renovations to the old school or asking the Minister of f ducation to expropnmate the land from the Dustnct and then lease it to the board But trustees favored going ahead with the new school scale The being smaller than orginally planned though on a structure presently considered would in COrporale sik to erght Classrooms including ser vices) half an activity toom a hbrary and an office The proposed playing field would be reduced by ap proammately SO per cent because oof the — reyected poning and the required provision for parking COSTLY DELAYS According te are hitest Kon Howard the delays hase orepalted an cost oan creases of PO to TS per cent pbhout SES OOO A further SIR fe seven per cent hike could be exnpected ueothe propel were delayed ooother sia months Trustee Don Burbidge, in putting forth two motions, said, “The longer we delay, the more it's going to cost us — no matter what we do.
