$10M federal study will take
time to implement, says Collins

CAPILANO-HOWE Sound MP Mary Collins, the minister
responsible for the status of women, admitted Friday it
may take ‘‘a long time’’ to implement some of the nearly
500 recommendations contained in the Final Report and
National Action Pian of the Canadian Panel on Violence

Against Women.

Collins, who is also the federal

health minister, released the report
on Thursday.

@ 24% of the cases of sexual
abuse were at the level of forced
or attempted forced sexual inter-
course;
@ 17% of the women interviewed
reported at least one experience of

incest before age 16;
@ 34% of women had been sex-
ually abused by a non-relative
before age 16;
@ 43% of women reported at
least one experience of incest
and/or extra-familial sexual abuse
before age 16;
@ 96% of perpetrators of child
sexual abuse were men.
