The theme of the competi- _tion was indigo (the colour and . the dye).to celebrate nvo cur- reat exhibitions: All About Blue at the Vancouver Museum to April 9 and Cobalt & Indigo at the Canadian Craft museum to Nov. 14. About 40 students from various Lower Mainland textile or design schools sub- mitted entries, Nineteen were sclected for show at Mood Indigo, the society’s Findrais- ing dinner and dance Oct. 23 ~‘at the Four Seasons Hotel. Ayimer’s and Carley’s cre- ations placed first and third in the competition, netting the textile designers cash prizes of $500 and $200 respectively. Both textile artists studied sur- face’ design at ~ Capilano College. Aylmer’s winning garment, a vest, was inspired by the fab- tic itself, a crisp silk organza that responds well to a variety of techniques. Dyed in indigo, it has a diamond-cut hemline that echoes the epplied and screened motifs on the body of the garment, and the tiny mir- rors suspended on indigo-dyed silk ribbons, Carley’s entry included a “long dress with train and hand- pleated shawl, both in silk rayon velvet, dyed in indigo and adorned with a dragon motif using a devoré technique.
