Sharon Miranda Mother of the victim Squamish District taxpayer bugged by councillors’ expenses Dear Editor: While some people are struggling to pay property taxes, others are selling their property decause they can’t keep up with escalating and NON-STOP Property CAN Increases. Via the May 28 North Shore News, the tax- payer became aware that $49,006 was used tor the sole benefit of six out of seven) North Vancouver Districts. councillors, who claimed business: expenses. OF that total, $2,152 are unspecified expenses. The taxpayer also fearned that one councillor claimed nothing. Hf one councillor, who is in her second term makes no business-expense chim, one cannot help won- dering why the others make this claim. Tt appears to me that some councillors are not fond of such virtues as integrity, morality, consei- entiousness and accountability, Some time age, the community indicated that it did nat approve the councillors’ wage Increase. Did the council: lors pay heed? Against the will of the communi- ty and at the expense of the taxpayers, they increased their wages, got new laptops and made unnecessary trips, What can an employer, in this case the taxpay- er, do with employees Ake the councillors, In any properly ran business organizations they would be fired, the chairman being the first one to go, and the money refiinded. My advice to those councillors who are not satisticd with their cur- rent wages and need to chim business expenses for car allowance, conventions, conferences atten- dance and trips to China is that they should vacate the position at the next election. Finally, [ would like to remind district's coun- cillors that in the past, rulers’ abuses resulted in the mobilization by and uplwaval of the masses.
