HERE ARE a few suggestions for maternity wear taken

® Check Fairweather in
Capilano Mail for some casual
separates that can be worn during
pregnancy if you buy them a little
larger than normal. Soft denim
shorts have full legs and a
drawstring waist by Jessica for
only $16.99. Feminine big shirts
with fully gathered yoke at the
shoulders and an extra fong hem
are cut in rich floral rayon for
$24.99 by Ever Blue.

&» To protect you from the rain,
stylish vinyl windbreakers in an
A-line are designed in bright red,
yeliow or blue and are reversible
with a black and white print on

® Sears in Capilano Mall has
some dress styles for office or
evening which could be adopted as
maternity wear. A nautical in-
spired shift dress is cut straight
and loose with a large square col-
lar, dropped waist and an at-
tached pleated skirt. It is designed
in royal blue rayon with white
trim. It is $79.99 by J.C. Collec-
tions.

» A dress with an attached
jacket is a pretty option. A style
with a softly draped jacket in a
cream, peach and green floral
print has an ornate button
closure. It covers a loose cream
dress with a slightly gathered
elasticized waist and a long skirt.

Project your image
with style and flair

THE EMPLOYMENT oppor-
tunities of the °80s are fond
memories for many people who
find themselves competing for
corporate positions against hun-
dreds of applicants.

But let’s say you've done the
research, revised your resume and
mailed it to prospective
employers. If all goes well, the
phone rings-in response and an
appointment with a personnel
director is scheduled.

Now, the nail biting begins.
What do you wear? What image
to project? What are they iooking
for in an applicant? A style con-
sultant for Marchon and Marcolin
provides a few tips:

Dress the part: Interviewer’s
opinions are formed within mo-
ments of introduction. Attire can
quickly tell a story about your
work habits, your personality and
self image.

The less makeup the better:
Keep away from dark eyeliner,

heavy mascara or too much
eyeshadow. The word ‘‘shadow’’
means just that — a hint of color.
Cheekbones require no more than
a light dusting of blush.

Don’t overdo your hairdo:
Short cropped hair or long hair
pulled into a modern upsweep is
appropriate. If hair is naturally
curly, be sure it is trimmed and
shaped.

A dress or suit are suitable: A
tailored suit is always your . best
bet. Add discreet accessories: a
handkerchief, lapel pin and small
earrings.

Similarly, a one-piece dress is
appropriate in some locales, ac-
cessorized with silk scarf, plain
gold-tone earrings and matching
necklace.

So while you may be anxious on
the inside, the image you project
to others with the right look may
get you that job after the first in-
terview.

Trends in Canadian fashion
highlighted at recent event

TORONTO READY to
Wear ready for.fall ... The
Toronto Ready to Wear
Collections recently took
place at Toronto’s Park
Plaza Hotel. The Collec-
tions showed Canadian de-
signers lines for Fall and
Winter ’92-93. The 200 seat
salon was packed for the
two-day event.

Designers from across Canada
were invited to participate in the
event and designers Jean Claude
Poitras, Brian Bailey, Marilyn
Brooks, Comrages, Franco
Mirabelli, Lida Baday and D’Arcy
Moses showed their lines.

The highlights of the event in-

cluded the following trends for
Canadian fashion:

@ designers showed both long and
short straight skirts, and most
long skirts had large slits up the
side

* most designers added pants
which were loose or siirn

© vests and jumpers were popular
looks

© asymmetrical closures were given
to jackets and shirts

© there was lots of texture, from
nubbly boucles to rich brocades

© grey and grey flannel showed up
everywhere along with black

¢ plaid in bold color combinations
continues next winter

® zippers closed everything or are
used as trim

® subtle diamond shapes were cut
into hemlines and closures
