As the newspaper and staff size grew, so did the degree of profes- sionalism, said Peters. And as that happened, the company started to become more involved in three North American newspaper associations. Since 1980, North Shore News _103-1433 Lonsdale N,V, NEWS photo Mike Wakefielé publication photographers have won 37 awards for excellence in photography from these. associa- tions. The British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA) and the Canadian Community Newspaper Association (CCNA) are made up of newspapers from across the province and country, respective- ly, and include. the. majority of non-daily publications. The Suburban Newspapers of America (SNA) represents publications throughout the Unit- ed States and Canada. Each association holds annual contests to determine what they believe are the best newspaper photographs from among their membership. Often, a natural for these awards are the hard news events such as fires and accidents, and, yes, even dead bodies. And although Peters recognizes that some readers are offended by such photographs, he said that these events are undeniably news- worthy. Publishing the more startling photographs, explains Peters, can instill a sense of caution in the minds of the readers. The department’s radios are vital to tracking the hard news events and to communicating with photographers on the road should something newsworthy occur. . That excitement of never know- ing what might happen next is part of the appeal of being a newspaper photographer. The North Shore News photographers include Peters, Mike Wakefield, Neil Lucente, Cindy Goodman, Paul McGrath and —— new to the staff — Brad Ledwidge, who has just replaced Stuart Davis.
