I am pleased to acknowledge that the film industry has taken a very responsible attitude in ensur- ing that the firearms it uses have also been mechanically altered to prevent the ficing of live amimuni- tion. Fully-automatic firearms, how- ever, pose a more difficult: prab- lem. These are considered pro- hibited weapons under the existing law and may only be possessed by members of police forces, the Ca- nadian Forces, and approved mili- tary museums. Most such firearms, however, re- main functional and hence con- tinue to fall within the scope of the law; which means that even simple possession is an offence. I appreciate that this places film producers who require them in a difficult situation. Recently, Parliament passed in- to law Bill C-6 which set up a system under which certain indus- trial concerns will be authorized to possess fully-automatic firearms. Regulations made under this legis- lation list the purposes for which these firearms may be pessessed, and place strict security conditions on those who will have access to them.
