14 - Friday, June 21, 1991 - North Shore News HOME & GARDEN Carrying out Canada’s Green Plan “ONE OF the special joys of liv- ing in Canada is to watch winter's snow disappear and the earth come alive each spring. The scent of grass, flowers, shrubs and trees awakens our senses. There is an expectancy in the air that is quict- ly exuberant, compelling us to celebrate it. In all paris of the country, we respond by planning our individual gardens, by digg- ing, by planting and by seeding our garden beds,’’ said the Hon. Don Mazankowski, former Minister of Agriculture, at a re- cent ceremony marking National Garden Month. “‘Last year, when the Canadian Garden Council designated May as National Garden Month, it began a particularly commendable project that not only did a great service to the public at large, but featured the nursery trades as a sector with a positive mission. “This year, the cauncil went a further step by promoting tree- planting ceremonies across Canada to mark the start of Na- tional Garden Month in each pro- vince and territory. Both symbol- ically and in fact. every planted tree brings us a small step forward in realizing a major part of Canada’s Green Plan: to act local- ly when we think of the environ- ment. The minister indicated his sup- port of a program by the Cana- dian Garden Council! — an in- dependent promotional osganiza- tion fostered by the Canadian Nursery Trades Association — to have a well-publicized tree-plan- ting program carried out in each Canadian capital city at the beginning of National Garden Month this vear, Each of the trees planted — in Ottawa and the provincia! capitals — will hase a special plaque noting the planting date and species. The program even extends to the Yukon Territory, which participated, but in the Northwest Territories, no suitable large, har- dy trees were available. Canada is recognized by many tourists, particularly visitors from the U.S.A., as a country of gardens. They flock by the thou- sands each year to gardens that are open to the public beginning in early April. Whether it be world-famous Butchart Gardens near Victoria, the Memorial Uni- versity Botanical Garden at Oxen Pond in Newfoundland, the Halifax Public Gardens or the Jardin Botanique in Montreal, visitors and Canadians alike marvel at the beauty that hor- ticulturists have created for them. ‘Dream home’ seminar offered at Quay Everyone has a dream, and for some, it’s planning, designing, and perhaps even building their own home.
