30 — Sunday, May 2, 1999 — North Shore News Terry Peters Contributing Writer THERE is something comfortable and invit- ing about the word cot- tage. It evakes images of relax- ation, a place where you can escape from the pressures of urban life, somewhere usually linked with water and nature. A cottage comes with a state of mind and it’s one sought after by many people. Although owning such a prop- erty is not possible for every- one, there is an alternative in beautiful books. The New Cottage Book by Jim Tolpin. Taunton Press, $41.95, Tolpin has produced a gor- gceous book covering the con- temporary variations of cot- tages. He provides a look at the history of the cottage structure and its development, in order to appreciate how today’s cot- tages came to be. After that introduction, he takes the read- er on a tour of 30 architectural treasures. Cortages located across America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and tranquil settings in between. Eight of the cottages fea- tured are located in the Pacitic Northwest. Each cottage is given an in-depth examination, including a floor plan, photos ef the exterior and_ interior, description of materials used and its history. A book you can curl up with and dream. The Cottage Book by Richard Sexton. Chronicle Book, $19.95 US. Cottages don’t only exist on the edges of lakes and nes- ted in old forests, many have survived urban development and remain true to their origins while the cities grew up around them. It is these structures that Sexton shares with the reader. He has located remarkable buildings, all in the Bay Area of San Francisco and_ provides mostly exterior photos and descriptions of a wide range of styles. While the buildings share an average dimension of less than 900 square fect, their use of the space and beautifi- cation of their exteriors are unique. Showing us how less can be more, we can sce how beauritul homes are possible with small beginnings. The English Country Cottage by Sally Griffiths. Friedman/ Fairfax Publishers, $38.50. It was in England where the term cottage Griginated and throughout its green country- side many of these structures stand today, 2 testament to the quality of their original con- struction. Some of the 25 cottages featured in this charming book date back to the 16th century. Each chapter examines a single dwelling and provides a selec- tion of photos with detailed descriptions of the home. In many cases the current owners have completed exten- sive restoration. Equally impor- tant in these traditional honies are the gardens, and they are featured in many of the pho- tographs. In fact the photos, all by Brian Harrison, show an attention to detail that brings the warmth and uniqueness of the cottages to life. A wonderful fook at the ori- gins of the cottages kept alive today.
