WHEN FASHION designer Mark
Hiscox was a kid, his friends used
to call him ‘“‘bug-eyed’’ because of
his glasses.

WEST VANCOUVER's scholarly fashion
designer Mark Hiscox prefers to work in
solid colors of black, white and neutrals to
show off the detailing of his designs. His-
cox’s spring/summer line for 1990 is influ-
st enced by the simple and graceful lines of
1 classical Greece.

“This affinity with creepy-
crawlies seems to have stuck long
after the glasses were replaced by
contact lenses. Now 21. Hiscox has
his own Iabel called Insekt, but
marketing his designs is the far-
thest thing from his mind.

Recently graduated from VCC’s
fashion arts program, Hiscox is
finishing up a foundation year at
Emily Carr before leaving for
London where he wants to study at
St. Martins.

A school-aholic? Maybe, but
then taking the conventional! route
doesn’t seem to be Hiscox’s style.

He first dabbled in fashion
design when he was in Grade 10.

“Il was really small and I could
never find anything that would fit
me,”’ Hiscox says.

So he got out an old bed sheet
and worked it into a pair of draw-
string shorts.
