Not just infants, but school-age children. Understanding the development of the foot can help you to sift through expert opinions on the subject of shoes for your child's feet. At birth, only the heel bone is developed: the rest of the foot is made up of muscles, cartilage and liga- ments. The cartilage has the shape of the future bones and is very fragile. At 14 months the hardening of the bones is just beginning, and by age three most of the cartilage has become bone. All the bones are shaned by age six, but the final Ge: - structure of the foot is not set before a child reaches 20. {tis the child’s stage of development, as well as the shape and size of the foot which determines what is best for that child. A well-fitting shoe should allow rocm for growth, but should still be a good fit. A shoe that is too big will exert pressure on the wrong part of the foot, and this could lead to permanent damage. For example, in a shoe that is too long, the widest part of the foot (the ball) will actually be sitting inside a narrower part of the shoe. A shoe which is too big will actually wear out faster because it cracks in the wrong spot as the foot bends. The above article was prepared by Ragne Johnston of Panda Shoes in North Vancouver.
