Finishing the 10-kilometre race in 2:20:39, McAffrey was just more than two minutes siower than the record of 2:18:00 set last year by Ian Hylands of West Van- couver. Seattle’s Greg MacCam was se- cond at 2:23:00, followed by top woman Andrea Dobrik of Pentic- ton at 2:24:12. From the start, McAffrey, MacCam and former national swim team member Fin Donnelly were neck-and-neck for most of the way, until the trio split to pass a freighter and the lone McAffrey picked up a shore-bound current for the winning edgc. “Tt was really exciting to watch,”’ said Swim B.C.’s Lesley Beatson, one of the race orga- nizers. ‘‘They were together most of the way — it was just incredible how it (the win) happened.” Heavy breakers at Lighthouse Park delayed the race’s start, and competitor Roy Goodman had to pull out before the starting gun after his support boat was swamped and later sank. Thirteen wetsuit-clad swimmers started the race, but one pulled out mid-way when performance faltered. Vancouver's Percy Norman won the first Vancouver Bay Swim in 1931, but the event was not held again until its revival three years ago. | ' | \ 1 NEWS photo Tom Burley which featured categories for a TERJE MOSNESSET captured the men’s A singles tille in the annual variety of skill fevels.
