At 17, THE ATTRACTIVE ard in- novative new dollar coin maintains the tradition of creativity and craftsmanship that has charac- terized the Royal Canadian Mint for nearly 80 years. As a branch of the Royal Mint of England, the Ottawa Mint was founded in 1908 and that same year struck its first coins for cir- culation. Now, the RCM is the country’s foremost refiner of gold, a major supplier of bullion products at home and abroad, and a renowned minter of coins for domestic and foreign markets. For example, the Mint has produced more than 5.2 billion coins for ‘foreign markets since 1976, accounting for up to 44 per cent of total annual produc- tion. Its status as a branch of the Royal Mint enced in 1931 when an Act of Parliament established the Royal Mint as a branch of the Department of Finance. Thirty- eight years later, in 1969, the Mint became a Crown corporation. The Mint’s Winnipeg plant was of- ficially opened in 1976 and since then, most circulating coinage for Canada and foreign customers has been struck in this state-of-the-art facility. The variety of alloys, sizes and shapes used in medal and coin production gives full scope to the artistic and engraving skills of the Mint’s production staff. For ex- ample, in 1985 the RCM created, designed, engraved and struck more than 50 new medals in addi- tion to modifying existing pro- ducts. The RCM is also well known for its gold refinery. In operation since 1911, it refines approximately 80 per cent of Canada’s gold every year. The Mint is the largest tefiner of gold in the Western hemisphere and has an_interna- tional reputation for accuracy, in- tegrity and competitiveness. The Mint has also enjoyed an excellent reputation for its numismatic programs which have wide appea! to coin collectors. The RCM is currently paying tribute to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games by issuing a series of 10 sterling silver coins over a period of 30 months. Some $30 million from sales of the coins will support athletes and help build Olympic facilities.
