10 - Sunday, May 31, 1987 - North Shore News Local women win distinction awards TWO NORTH Shore women were chosen by their peers to be among the elite women of distinction honored at the annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards banquet Thursday. The Communications and Public Affairs award went to former Province reporter Kay Alsop, in recognition of a journalism career spanning 27 years. Among her many distinctions, Alsop was the first to cover the Trudeau marriage and the only woman journalist in the country to fly with the Snowbirds. She currently writes for Style Magazine and is the fashion editor for B.C. Woman to Woman mag- azine. Dr. Thelma Sharp’ Cook, was honored in the Management and Professions category. The award recognized Dr. Cook’s expertise in the manage- ment of public, private and non- profit organizations. She’s listed in the prestigious Who’s Who of B.C., the World’s Who’s Who of Community Service and of Women in Education. Dr. Cook has a PhD in An- thropology and Education and her various community commitments include founding director of the Crisis and Suicide Prevention Cen- tre for Greater Vancouver, St. Paul’s Hospital, the Koerner Foundation and the UBC Senate. Award winners were chosen by a panel of judges totalling 66 women nominated by individuals, business and community organizations from the Lower Mainland. Over 800 people attended Thursday’s awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency which featured Vancouver singer/composer Nancy Nash and keynote speaker and former woman of distinction Lori Fung.
