AlO - Friday, May 18, 1984 - North Shore News CROSS-FIRE by Ellsworth Dickson HAVING VAST wilderness areas with many forms of wildlife, B.C. is a special place and most residents, both hunters and oon-bunters, are concerned about the present state and future of our animals. Today, we present two views on bunting. Dr. Pat Moore President, Greenpeace ESS Denais Collins Hunting Lodge Owner PORNOGRAPHY TROPHY HUNTING asa blood sport is barbaric and belongs in the past. It is un- fortunate that hunting is described as an extension of the survival instunct of hun- ung for food. So much of the hunting that takes place to- day is an extension of the genocidal tendency, the need to kill. That is what is bar- baric about hunting and that is why we are against trophy hunting and the hunting that is practised by aristocrats. Fox hunting is strictly a blood sport, for instance. We say there should be a [ HAVE HUNTED for almost 20 years, and present- ly own a lodge near Lillooet. 1 do not think it is immoral or wrong to hunt animals. After all, most of us eat beef, pork, chicken, and so on. What's the difference, except that wild meat ts better. There are no additives. 1 think trophy hunting 1s all might because the hunter ts only going after one par- ucular animal. He may come back with nothing if he does not find the right animal. | think most trophy hunters also take the meat. If the species is in no danger and the hunting is for food, then we think a local resident should be able to hunt. It is wrong to fly in from another country to ex- ploit our game. That kind of hunter is not part of the pro- vince’s ecosystem. The first thing the govern- ment should do is make 11 il- legal for anyone who lives in a city to go hunting. City dwellers have food stores where they can buy meat. The guide outfitter prac- uuces in northern B.C_ are a | consider myself a respon- sible hunter and ! am con- cerned that other hunters would be competent in the bush. It ts a small percentage of hunters that bring liquor into the bush and blast anything that moves. But the provincial government does need more game wardens. Poaching does take place. If hunting were totally banned, poaching would in- crease. | beheve the provin- cial government knows what iS gomg on, but not how many animals have been kill- ed. Not all hunters fill out the monopoly and riddled with corruption. What it comes down to is that foreign money is controlling wildlife and trophy hunting in the north. They are basically an extension of the gun lobby. Since 90% of the people in B.C. are non-hunters, I think that only 10% of the pro- vince should have hunting. We need many more game wardens. In northern B.C., there are three game wardens for an area about the size of France. The wolf kill situation is an example of bad_ wildlife questionnaire. I don’t think hunting en- dangers our game animals. We used to hunt duck on Vancouver Island, however, it is not allowed anymore. There is an example of con- servationists going too far. The duck species were not endangered. The reason there are so many wolves is that there is food for them. It is not because too many game animals have been shot. By the way, I don’t think there should be a doe hunting season in most areas. The wolf ts be- ing used as a scapegoat. The trophy animals’ carcass ts left on the ground upon which the wolves feed for months, not to mention the abandon- ed horses which starve to death. In other words the sur- vival of the wolf is being in- sured by the trophy hunting business. And then they are taking it out on the wolves. Since a mountain sheep’s head is worth thousands of dollars, dead that is, « 1s the guide outfitters and trophy hunters who are letting human greed run the show. tend to stay in a small area and this brings in too many hunters. A wide roaming buck will breed with more than one doe, but it is the doe, of course, that produces the offspring. For the same reason, | don’t think there should be a cow and calf season for moose. We already have strict hun- ting regulations in B.C. and responsible hunters adhere to them. \ encourage the public to learn more about hunting ‘before they condemn‘ the hunters.
