Boneless fish

(IDRC)-A Canadian-made
machine to separate fish
from their bones will provide
people in developing
countries with more and
cheaper food.

Minced fishmeat balls are
a popular food throughout
Asia. But before you can
make fishmeat, you have to
remove the bones. Only
certain types of fish are easy
to debone, and the demand
for their flesh is steadily
driving prices up, making it
less affordable for poorer
people.

Yet larger quantities of

_ other types of fish are

regularly caught and
discarded in the search for
the few highly desired types.
To turn this waste into a
useful food resource,
engineers at the Technical
University of Nova Scotia
and the Atlantic Bridge
Company, funded by
Canada's International
Development Research
Centre, are at work on a
simple. mechanical fish
deboner to make minced
meat out of “trash” fish.
Their novel design
features a perforated drum

rotating inside another fixed |

drum.
