Bits from a cluttered desk

This column should be
entitled “Bits and Pieces”
because it’s a mishmash of
mail, travel tips and results
from my annual Christmas
housecleaning of files and
desk.

Two clippings from our
daily newspaper fell out of

the stack. The first, from
Mexico dealt with the
unfortunate death of a

mother and daughter under
the wheels of a bus. The
driver, after hitting the pair,
realized that they had
survived the collision but
were seriously injured. So,
he went into reverse and
HIT THEM AGAIN. He had
judged that company policy
was best served by corpses
rather than injured people --

after all, bunal costs are
cheaper than extended
medical costs. If you're

heading for Mexico, bear it
in mind if you're crossing
busy streets

The second was the report
of an airline crash in which a

large number of people
penshed. The commission
investigating the crash

deemed it to be pilot error,
in that the pilot “failed to
maintain sufficient distance
from the ground” Yes, |

Another phone call from a
reader informed me that I'd
better watch my money
when visiting either Israel or
Egypt. The problem is “left-
overs” when you pay for
anything, you get your
change in the cash of the
country. She's found it
impossible to exchange the
money of either country
since she’s returned to
Canada.

I called Deak Perea
Canada Inc. who deal in
foreign currency. They tell
me that banks won't touch
most foreign currencies but
they will be glad to take the
“left-overs” off her hands.
The old Isreali pounds are
absolutely worthless but the
newer sheckels can be
exchanged with no problem
Egyptian money may take a
httle longer because some of
the bills must be checked
before they are redeemed
So, if you're stuck with some
foreign curency and want to
trade itin, give Linda Ayotte

checking out Arizona as a
winter get-away for water-
logged and snow bound
Canadians. All I know about
Arizona is that it’s 24 degrees
(C) mm the daytime and goes
down to 10 at night. Sounds
great.
