DECLINING | enrolments,
and a rising average age of
teachers in West Vancouver
is forcing the school board
there to take a hard look at
early retirement plans.

However, a discussion on
the school board’s strategy at
a meeting Monday, brought
criticism from the West Van
Teacher Association as early
retirement will be a
negotiating item in this fall’s
contract talks.

“We've already agreed to
discuss it at the bargaining
table,’’ said WVTA
president Paddy Boyle.

“We've no objection to the
school board looking at
various retirement plans, but
we do not feel it would have
been right for the board to
adopt a strategy when it is on
the bargaining table,” Boyle

retirement, it will encourage
qualifying teachers to retire
before the age 65.

The objectives of the plan
would be to maximize
teachers’ retirement benefits
through pension and in-
vestment, to incur no ad-
ditional salary expense to the
school board through early
retirement bonus, to ensure
that any early retirement
decision would be positive to
both the teacher and school
district and to ensure that
the plan would not substitute
for teacher evaluation.

association was not worried
that the declining
enrolments would force
layoffs of teachers, because
the attrition rate of retiring
and resigning teachers was
