If you think that sounds unlikely, then consider. the following prices — $15 for bed and breakfast, $16 for a three-course dinner and $2.25 for a litre of delicious beer. Surprised? To be sure, Germany is an expensive country. To rent a hotel room in Frankfurt or Hamburg could easily run you around ai hundred dollars per night but by getting off the beaten track and making for some of the smaller towns and villages you can save yourself a bundle. One of the most popular areas with Germans themselves (and with other Europeans) is Franconia. Called after the same Germanic tribe that gave their name to France, it is that part of northern Bavaria which includes the towns of Wuerzburg and Bamberg. Franconia is a major wine producing area. Most of the wine is made in Wuerzburg. gateway to the rest of the region, and you can easily reach it by car, train or bus from Frankfurt (the airport where flights from Canada terminate). Wuerzburg (or Boet sbocyg as locals pronounce it) is historic and interesting It was badly damaged in World War II (80% of the buildings were bombed) but it has been rebuilt in the old style and many of the original facades remain Ruled for centuries by the powerful Prince-Bishops. Wuerzburg is dominated by the fortress from which they ee ai | ke i ‘ fine wines PET CORNER CIAL TRAVEL FEATURE -1 conducted their affairs — Marienberg — which sits high on a hill above the town, overlooking the River Main. Inside the palace there are some lavishly decorated rooms bursting with baroque extravagance. The Em- peror’s Hall, which is the scene of the annual Wuerzburg Mozart Festival, is embellished with frescoes by the Venetian painter, G.B. Tiepolo, and_ the ceiling is crammed with chubby cherubs. If you're a history buff, head for Bamberg, 70 kilometres to the east of Wuerzburg. Bamberg is well over 1,000 years old (it was first mentioned in the town records in 902) and _ it's famous for its four towered cathedral. Together with Chartres and Cologne, it ranks as one of Europe's finest. The original building was constructed in 1012 during the reign of Kaiser Henry II but it burned down twice durng the ensuing years. The cathedral which stands today dates from the early {3th century and it's a mixture of Renaissance and Gothic styles.
