NV City approves corporate daycare FINAL APPROVAL was passed Monday for North Vancouver City’s first cor- porate-sponsored childcare centre. By Pamela Lang Contributing Writer The Chemex Labs Lid. centre will have a 35-child capacity. According to a report from city planning technician Pauline Jang, the city has relaxed its 150- square-feet-per-child outdoor play area requirement, and allowed Chemex, at 212 Brooksbank Ave., to build its space based on the provincial standard of 75 square feet per child. The report explained that part of the need for the doubled city requirement is to ‘‘create adequate separation from neighboring pro- perties,”’ at centres in residential neighborhoods. The staff recommendation to alow the relaxed requirement was based on two factors: * the facility will be located adja- cent to a park, allowing an alter- native play area; e®and high land values in the commercial area ‘‘create onerous costs’’ to meet the requirements. Chemex representatives told city council that the company will spend $90,000 to build the facility and $30,000 a year to subsidize its operation, keeping fees at ‘‘rea- sonable market rates’’ of $595 per month for children under three otor Vehicle Injury Claims Free initial consultation Percentage fees or hourly rates 687-0411 Call Stephen Frame, Loreen Williams or Jim Graham MARPER. Chemex general manager Bob Brown said that Chemex employees can probably expect a fee subsidy of approximately $100 per month, The decision to buiid a childcare facility was based primarily on a survey conducted by the company, he added. The Chemex survey results showed that 79% of the repon- dents indicated an interest in using a childcare facility near the work place, said Brown. Chemex has chosen a nine-year childcare veteran, Little Rascals Daycare, as its operator. Little Rascals is expected to have a five-year lease for the space with a five-year renewal option, Jang’s report stated. The terms of the lease show that Little Rascals will operate as a separate entity but will not pay rent on the space.
