been abie to purchase her influenza shot at her
local pharmacist on a doctor’s prescription and

have the innoculation. administered by her
physician.

This year Mary has been to
all North Shore pharmacists
and has been told the shots
are unavailable -- that’s the
case throughout B.C. and
Canada. She is somewhat
anxious, ‘especially in the
wake of a swine fiu scare.

. “But there is no cause for

alarm,’’ says Gordon Davies,
coordinator of North Shore
pharmacists. ‘‘Most of the
anxiety is caused by misin-
formation that there will be a
swine flu epidemic,’’ he
added.

Reports of several swine
flu_ cases, last February at
U.S. army base, Fort Dix, in
New Jersey, prompted the
U.S. government to prepare
an immunization program. In

the Fort Dix incident, one of -

the cases died, and several
hundred men were found to
be infected, but not neces-
sarily ill,

The Canadian government
followed the U.S. decision
‘after a meeting with provin-
cial health departments. The
decision was not unanimous, .
but a majority of the
‘participants thought it ‘‘pru-
dent to make the new vaccine
- Type A New Jersey swine |
flu. strain--available to as
many Canadians as _ pos-
sible,’’ according to a'Mini-
ster of Health report.

Chalmers and B- Hong Kong
strains.

B. C. has placed orders for
900,000 doses of the A-swine
only vaccine, and between
75,000 to 100,000 doses of
the combined A-Victorla and
A-Swine flu strains. The
good news is the vaccines are
expected to arrive between
late October and November.
However, ‘t#® amount of
vaccines will not be ‘sufficient
to immunize everyone in
B.C., according to confirmed
reports,

Dr. Eric MacBean, North
Shore Medical Officer, told
the North Shore News that
plans are being discussed to
determine how best to
distribute the vaccines.
‘‘What we are ‘thinking: of
doing is patients will be
given.a prescription if thelr
doctor believes they should
get it. The. innoculations will
be available only at the ‘North
Shore Health Unit,’ he said.
Dr. MacBean emphasized
the innoculation procedures
will be détermined in. con-
junction with the B.C.
