8 - Friday, November 17, 1989 - North Shore News MAILBOX Businesses thanked for support | Dear Editor: The North Shore Volunteers for Seniors would like to compliment our focal merchants for their support in our presentation of a workshop recently held in our office. Our assuciation registered 20 students from local high schools to work with seniors in West Van Care Centre, Inglewood Hospital and Kiwanis Lynn Manor respectively. We have been developing an alternative to the candy striper programs which focuses on the smaller community care facilities instead of the maior hospitals. The recent Saturday workshop covered facts and fallacies of aging, biological age changes, wheelchair safetv and cammnunication skills. The merchants’ support involved providing lunch, free of charge, for those involved. Capers’ contribution was outstanding: they provid- ed us with a generous assortment of cold, sliced meats, croissants and platters of fresh fruit. Stongs provided the beverages and Dundarave Bakery gave us dessert treats. A real feeling of community involvement was felt with the coordinating of this day’s activities. We are ever so grateful for the unselfish contribution of our neighborhood businesses. Wendy Hanna Loma Lloyd-Jones West Vancouver Elderly also beiong in W. Van Dear Editor: With reference to the report in the News, Sept. 28, on seniors’ housing in West Vancouver. It was encouraging to read that at least one member of West Van- couver Council recognizes the fact that we desperately need seniors’ housing. It has seemed to me in the been more interested in preserving the history of West Vancouver, restoring old buildings and beauti- fying an area that is already Geautiful, than worrying about the aging population. There have been attempts by concerned groups to build practical housing to meet the needs of who wish to continue to live in West Vancouver. Council’s idea appears that these good citizens should be relocated. They spoil the view in this ‘Place of Excellence.’ Thank you alderman Pat Boname for your bold statement on this issue.
