Salmon funding announced A total of $920,000 provinciai money is going to 43 community groups and 22 municipal govern- ments in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island fer this year’s urban salmon habitat program. The urban salmon habitat program began in 1985 with the goal of protecting and restor ing wild salmon and other salmonid stocks in the Georgia Basin. The program is part of the broader provincial fisheries strategy and com- plements the Fish Protection Act, Fisheries Renewal B.C., Forest Renewal §b.C. and the Forest Practices Code. The program has oo components. Grants to local government support municipal efforts to identify and protect fish habitat in land-use and development decisions. Community stew- ardship grants help groups and schools pro- tect, enhance and raise public awareness of salmon and their habitats.
