10 — North Shore News — Wednesday, December 1, 1999 is Dear Editor: T was very disappointed by recent arti- cles in the Sun and the North Shore News regarding the recent’ North Vancouver District elections and reteren- da, where losing candidates blame every- body but themselves for losing the clec- tion, and others disparage voter’s intelli- gence. Maureen Bragg is quoted i in the Sus as saying, that “the public voted for candi- dares endorsed by an unknown society like a bunch of sheep.” Well, Ms. Bragg, this sheep and a num- ber of his flock went to several all-candi- dates miectings and the mayoral meeting. We asked questions. We watch some coun- cil meetings on TV. My wife and I drew up our own slate before that slate you refer to was circulated, and ours was identical bur for one person. * ~ We did not support several incumbents because of their be aviour at council, both in terms of rambling on for hours, grand- ; standing, and/or personal attacks on others. MAIL Box We didn’t support the “attacker's” allies either. One we faulted for, amongst other things, poor quality homework on issues, We did not like candidates whose writ- ten information was all motherhood. Our vote on councillors had nothing to do with the WTF (Waterfront Task Foree) — we had a separate chance to vote that issue. We did our homework, and felt that there was more chance of 2 co-operative, effective council with changes, and with the present rnayor. 1 vored against the WTF, not because I am against waterfront access nor because of that rather blatant and stupid flyer showing high-rises along the waterfront. I have read the WTF Report and the “Tandem Report”. The referendum question did not ask if you support more access to the waterfront in prin iple, but rather do you support increa: access “as described in the Waterfront Task Force Phase 2 Interim Report” with its 200 recommendations. jinting comments The report completely fails to define the problem in specitics, defines no lower priced options, and ignores many costs and legal/practical obstac Ms. Bragg sees us as sheep. Treve Carolan, of like mind, is quoted as electors “didn't have much clue what they were voting for”, and warns the “waterfront aristocrats” that “your day will come.” Nice talk. Dave Sadler opines “taxpayers were duped.” Glenys Deering-Robb is quoted as saying the elected slate “have obviously agreed to keep the beach as is with the bar- ricades,” Well fotks, 1 de not think we, the elec- torate are as stupid or naive as many of you seem to think. Having read these comments from defeated candidates, one might think that perhaps electors made the right call after all John Hunter North Vancouver District johnhunter@idmail.com { : : é : ! i Voted Cee Best . Revelations about the true aims of the “Concerned Citizens,” which was formed in apparent secrecy, came too Jate to alert the voters in time. The. result is that, for now, district. council will be under . the control of this group and their spokespersons. What a way to start a leader-come- election campaign, especially being one of the chief lead- ers of the lost.
