From page 26 Someone must have been responsible for making this project work so well but the CD credits keep it a secret. No names stand out from the sessions recorded in Nashville, Austin and Houston. A great team effort from ali concerned. Even Yma Sumac’s “Gopher Mambo” works. Highly recommended. A “ride through the ghetto” courtesy of Black Hand Entertainment. All-new, all-star hip-hop intended as a teaser for the forthcoming movie Black Gangster, based on the novel by Donal Goines. The music, mainly recorded at Black Hand’s New York studios, keeps the narrative in focus with apt raps and beats. Def Jam’s Jay-Z, Ja Rule and DMX are tracks one, ovo and three on the CD setting things up nicely for the rest of Black Hand’s stellar cast. There is no extrancous material here, no digressions from a collective purpose — everybody gets three to five minutes to make their contribution. Sixteen tracks in all with a lot of variety in the mix ‘— check out Kasual’s thrilling “Money Tree” or the lover’s rock of Donell Jones on “I Hope That it’s You”. An essential collection and if the music is any indication Black Gangster wili be well worth wait- ing for. @ #&kkk Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill — Live in Seattle (1999 Green Linnet 1195). Their approach involves improvisation and writing new material for their arrangements. Live in Seattle captures them in performance at Seattle's Tractor Tavern on 2 particu- larly inspired night last January. ‘Hayes and Cahill will play in Vancouver next Friday, Oct. 1 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre...
